The Tea Party-backed state senator and former military commander pulled out a huge victory on Tuesday to become Iowa’s first ever female GOP U.S. Senate nominee, capturing 56 percent of the vote. The next closest candidate was Sam Clovis at 18 percent.
Mark Jacobs, once considered the front-runner in this race, finished third with about 17 percent of the vote. After Jacobs made some controversial comments, the Chamber of Commerce and other establishment elements jumped on the Ernst bandwagon, giving her a huge boost.
Joni Ernst will face Democrat Congressman Bruce Braley in the November general election.
